Rye UX Design Internship

Rye is a tech startup building API to redefine e-commerce so that it is easy, open, and programmatic.

Overview

Project Type

UX Design, Project Management, Graphic Design

Duration

September - December 2023

My Role

My main role has been to manage and design a website prototype that will showcase how the Rye API can be used in a dropshipping context. In addition, I have assisted in designing graphics for marketing and promotional use.

*This case study is intentionally limited in scope due to NDA. For more information about my work at Rye, contact me.

The Problem

Potential Rye customers may have a challenging time understanding what Rye does and how that can add value to their business. Because the Rye API is a relatively new concept, people find it challenging to conceptualize the API. This is a barrier to success for Rye, because they risk losing revenue generated by new users.

The Solution

Design a store-builder web app for dropshipping that is powered by the Rye API. Store-builders and website builders are familiar concepts that are easily recognized and understood by many within the e-commerce realm. Dropshipping is a newer concept within e-commerce, but it is also recognizable. The dropshipping component serves as the use case example for how the Rye API can enable easier e-commerce.

Challenges

This internship was conducted remotely, which was my first time working remotely. I found it challenging to remember to keep on top of slack, and had to adjust to not interacting with coworkers in person.

It was also challenging to manage myself throughout the design process. As there was no designer on staff for the second half of my internship, I struggled to make design decisions without experienced guidance.

Learning Outcomes

I learned a lot while in my internship at Rye. Most importantly, I was reminded of the importance of communication, particularly in a remote work environment. I learned to lean more on Figma to visually communicate my understanding of project objectives and design needs. Communication is always important, and I feel confident that I’ve improved my remote communication skills.
